Considerations at design stage regarding the accessibility, positioning and finish should be discussed between the client and builder. The expected outcome will determine the level of maintenance required.

Australia has the highest UV rating, causing any timber left uncoated to
turn a weathered silvery grey. This is due to the UV rays slowly degrading the surface and cellulose fibres in the timber, which in turn changes the natural colour.

The extent of maintenance can depend on two main points;

1. The type of finish that’s applied – All external coatings need to be applied and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

2. The amount of additional protection the façade has from the weather
including the degree of sun exposure – Extra protection can include wide eaves, soffits, avoiding water traps, utilise balconies/ covered space or even glass panelling installed in front of the cladding.

For a minimal maintenance option, consider allowing WOOD ELEMENTS to weather naturally. Greying affects the surface of the timber, if a change in appearance is decided WOOD ELEMENTS can be rejuvenated and finished to the new desired effect. An extensive process may be required to prepare the surface for rejuvenating and finishing, depending on the degree in breakdown of the surface fibres.

WOOD ELEMENTS requires no structural maintenance once installed correctly.

Close Up Profile 300×250

Designer/Profiles

Wood Elements profiles collective features include; a straight-line edging process to ensure the cladding is machined to a fine tolerance and is extremely straight; relief grooves which are designed to take the stress out of the cladding, reducing the effect of warping and cupping; a specially designed ridge locater connects with the overlap line providing an effortless straight-line finish, simultaneously controlling the expansion allowance for any timber movement. Available in two apprearance options; Dressed Face a smooth surface or the new Sawn Brushed Face a rough texture and rustic look.

COULEE

Following a traditional shadowline profile, Coulee is about flow. The contemporary shadowline can be installed in either vertically or horizontally. This open profile enables water to drain away, ensuring a barrier to the wall.

FLUME

With its narrow channel, Flume creates a clean square edged pencil shadowline for crisp definition between each board.

Close Up Trim 300×250

Designer/Corner/Details

Trims are essential for achieving a streamlined and watertight finish. All our aluminum trims come pre-fitted with waterproof gaskets, reducing the need for extensive sealing on-site and simplifying the delivery of materials. To meet various design preferences, Wood Elements offers trims in both traditional matching timber and modern anodized aluminum. Additionally, a chromate-treated aluminum option is available for those looking to customize with powder coating.

Close Up Fixing 300×250

Design/Elements & Fixings

Extreme care is evident in every aspect of our WOOD ELEMENTS Refined Architectural Hardwood Cladding. From environmentally responsible sourcing and meticulous milling and drying processes to the precision of profile and trim design, species selection, and even the finishes and accessories—every element is crucial to the system’s overall performance.

Designed with concealed fixing in mind. Using a WURTH ASSY®PLUS A2 Decking Construction Screw 0166115550 along the pre machined “screw location” line enables the board to slip over the secured row quickly and easily, creating a clear face finish.

All the timber selected for our Wood Elements range undergoes a meticulous air-drying process for up to 12 months, reducing the moisture content to ideal fiber saturation levels. Following this, the timber is subjected to Hurford’s proprietary double drying technology in our kilns. This advanced method enhances the timber’s stability significantly, resulting in a final product characterized by minimal moisture variability. This careful control ensures superior quality and durability in all our Wood Elements products.

Wood Elements Logo Double Dried Tech

When timber is milled and dried, it naturally accumulates internal stresses that can cause the wood to spring and bow. While certain techniques can minimize these deformations during the drying process, it’s not possible to eliminate them entirely at this stage. To address this, Hurford’s employs a specialized post-drying straightening process. This critical step ensures that each board is perfectly straight and maintains its form over time, facilitating smooth installation and preserving the precision of designed shadowlines in our Wood Elements products. This attention to detail guarantees a flawless finish and enduring quality.

Wood Elements Straight Line Dressed Logo

The Automatic Spacing System streamlines the installation of cladding by incorporating built-in expansion gaps between the boards. This innovative feature eliminates the need for special tools or separate spacers, ensuring precise spacing effortlessly. The system includes a specially engineered ridge locator that not only manages the expansion allowance to accommodate moisture-related changes but also cleverly conceals the cladding screws. This built-in adaptability reduces stress on the boards, maintaining their integrity whether they absorb or release moisture, thereby enhancing the overall durability and appearance of the installation.

All cladding profiles and trims in the Wood Elements range are equipped with moisture-sealing gaskets to enhance durability and protection against the elements. The aluminum trims in the collection feature a double-seal system, with factory-fitted foam gaskets that flex with the natural movement of the timber, providing an additional layer of defense against the rigors of the Australian storm season. These pre-installed gaskets streamline the installation process by eliminating the need for on-site sealing, thus cutting down labor costs. However, it’s important to note that while the Wood Elements Moisture Barrier System significantly boosts moisture resistance, it does not replace the necessity for sound construction practices and adherence to the Building Code of Australia.

Wood Elements Logo Moisture Barrier System 768×207

Employing a specially engineered end-match system for outdoor applications, Wood Elements end-match profile features a micro-bevel edge designed to promote water drainage away from the joints. Additionally, a factory-installed seal is integrated to prevent moisture transfer and guarantee a watertight connection. By end-matching the product, boards can be fixed mid-stud, eliminating the need for cutting and minimizing waste by up to 10% compared to traditional methods. This not only saves costs but is also environmentally friendly, reducing resource consumption.
